What it signifies is climbing the ladder is not a symbolic expression where you aspire for it and it happens. He is trying to convey that it is really hard work and you have to set foot on each step to get to the top.
Well I see him firmly holding the side wall and then looking down. That goes on to signify that climbing is one thing - staying on top is another. It is important not just to climb to the top but stay there and look down and help others to climb as well.
Kannan you have given a different perspective to this.
But the wall and the ladder together are providing the much needed support. The ladder and wall are not mutually exclusive where He can be supported only by the wall or only by the ladder.
